How to choose your first freelance service
Turn a skill into a clear beginner freelance service with a practical offer, sample brief and delivery checklist.

Start with something you can demonstrate
A useful first service is a specific task you can complete well. Write down work you have already done: organizing a spreadsheet, preparing presentation slides, editing a short video, or writing a product description. Choose one task and create a sample before offering it to someone else. Your sample should demonstrate the work itself, rather than promise a result you cannot control.
Define one buyer and one deliverable
A broad offer such as “I do marketing” is difficult to evaluate. A clearer offer might be: “I prepare a five-post content calendar for a small clothing shop.” Specify the format, quantity and inputs you need. For a presentation service, describe the number of slides, whether the client provides the text, and which editable file they receive. Avoid including several unrelated services in the same starter offer.
Write a small service brief
Use this template: I help [type of customer] with [task]. You receive [deliverable]. You provide [inputs]. The service includes [scope] and [revision limit]. Delivery is agreed before work begins. Example: I help small shops organize their monthly stock list. You receive one spreadsheet with product names, quantities and a simple reorder column. You provide the current product list. This example explains the work; it does not guarantee sales or profit.
Check that the offer is realistic
Complete the sample using the same process you would use for a customer. Record how long the work takes and identify missing inputs. If you cannot finish the sample reliably, narrow the scope or practise the skill first. Ask someone to read your brief and explain what they expect to receive. If their answer differs from your intention, rewrite it.
